OUTCOME 2: Children Are Connected With And Contribute To Their World
Children’s connections with the different ways to belong to people, countries and communities help them learn ways of being, reflecting the values, traditions and practices of their families and communities. Children learn to become interdependent with others and within different environments when they participate in everyday routines, events and experiences and have opportunities to contribute decisions.
VELS LEVEL 2: Grade 1 and 2

Activities:
VELS LEVEL 2: Grade 1 and 2
(Children develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and understanding of the reciprocal rights and responsibilities necessary for active civic participation)
- Identify the range of groups to which they, their family members and their class belong
(Children respond to diversity with respect)
- Begin to appreciate the similarities and differences between individuals and groups, including the language, cultural and religious groups that make up the Australian Nation.
- Identify what is familiar and what is different in their own and other cultures
Activities:
- Creating an encyclopedia of the world, that has different art works done by the children and that can be put in a portfolio- where the children can “read” it and see the different countries in a book and maybe for each country the teachers could write a small bibliography of the countries
For this activity the children are able to collaborate with each other, by putting some of their art works that represents their country in an "encyclopedia book", where the children can read it and see the different images and information about the countries. This is a good way for children to identify, what countries their class mates belong to and appreciate the cultural differences. - Create a song about the different countries of the world - Example, Youtube video below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpTR1wF4M6k
Creating a song together really brings the children together, and they are able to identify what is familiar among each other. We believe that writing a song together, gets children to understand equality among each other and especially since our concept is 'Around The World' the children can relate to the song. Examples of songs that can be seen, are from the following url above.
